Insuring Your Collection and Ensuring You'll Collect
"Any appraisal is a good appraisal until you claim a loss."

That's what is well known in the insurance industry, but not well understood by those outside: collectors; homeowners; even dealers in the very merchandise that needs to be appraised for insurance.

The point is that insurance companies will accept appraisals, and premium payments, with little or no question until they are called upon to cover a loss.

That's when the questions are asked. That's when the issue of appraisal validity is raised. and that's when the knowledge, experience, procedures, and verifiable credentials of the appraiser are carefully reviewed.

Questions may also arise with regard to appraisals for tax purposes: estates or donations, for example; or division of property.

Because there is virtually no limitation on who may claim to be an appraiser, a potential client should explore credentials carefully. Membership in a major appraisal organization such as the American Society of Appraisers indicates a serious approach to the appraisal profession. Two other organizations, AAA and ISA also offer their members educational opportunities. All three require adherence to the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice. All three have web sites that describe their requirements for certification and include a database of members.

Our own experience is extensive. Accepted as an Expert Witness in the State of New Jersey, we have appraised an enormous range of personal property, from a lock of Abraham Lincoln's hair to Albert Einstein's furniture. And although we have appraised museum property and important private collections, day to day appraisal assignments more often involve modest collections.

We have been a long time active member of the American Society of Appraisers, have served often as a Princeton Chapter Officer as well as its President.

We're glad to look at pictures, but can not reliably estimate value on that basis alone. Please contact us through our Contact page.
