Colorful Picchavai of Sri Nath-ji
This painted cotton temple hanging representing Sri nath-ji dancing with the gopis was created for festival use. This manifestation of Lord Krishna is worshipped in the village of Nathdwara in Rajasthan. Made for Southeast Asian export, decorated in underglaze blue with a fanciful horse soaring among the clouds; raised from the Hoi An shipwreck, the glaze degraded as with almost all the recovered cargo, but every bit as fine as the comparable example acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.   Vietnam. c. 1500. 17 1/2" D.
